Grand Cayman Travel Tips
Arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours prior to your departure flight time.
Check in online 24 hours prior to reconfirm your flights.
Remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry-ons = 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3.4 ounce (100ml) container size is a security measure.
Carry-on luggage is restricted to 1 carry-on and 1 personal item per person
Make a photo copy of your passport and carry with you separate from your original in the event your passport is lost or stolen.
Check with your airline and find out applicable fees for luggage as these fees change regularly.
Don't forget to pack sun block.
Don't litter in Grand Cayman. You'll get a US$500 fine.
Do try a Mudslide, as this is Grand Cayman's national drink, along with the ubiquitous Heineken.
Do buy Tortuga or Blackbeard Rum and rum cakes.
Do drive on the left.
Do exchange greetings and pleasantries. Caymanians are respectful and will address you as "Miss" and "Mister."
All major credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and local shops. The local currency is the Cayman Islands Dollar (CI$) however the US dollar is widely accepted throughout the islands. The CI$ is fixed to the US dollar at $1.25 US Dollars equals $1.00 Cayman Island Dollar.
There is no National Health Service in the Cayman Islands and even the most remedial medical treatment is expensive. We advise you to take out adequate travel and medical insurance before travelling.
Tip 15% in hotels and restaurants if a service charge has not been added to the bill. Most hotels and many restaurants automatically add a service charge of 10%-15%—if you're not sure, ask.
Don't buy turtle products. The U.S., Canada and the U.K. have signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, and it is illegal to import such items.
Don't buy Cuban Cigars to bring home, it is also illegal.
